Frequently Asked Questions
General
What is Flowistry?
Flowistry is a native macOS application for rule-based file automation. It monitors folders and automatically processes files based on triggers and actions you define - without writing any code.
What macOS version is required?
Flowistry requires macOS 14 (Sonoma) or later. It runs natively on both Apple Silicon and Intel Macs.
How much does Flowistry cost?
Flowistry is available as a one-time purchase for $9.99 / 9.99 EUR on the Mac App Store. No subscription required.
Is there a free trial?
The Mac App Store doesn't support free trials. However, you can request a refund within 14 days if the app doesn't meet your needs.
Features
How many workflows can I create?
There's no limit. Create as many workflows as you need.
Can I monitor multiple folders?
Yes, each workflow can monitor one folder, and you can create multiple workflows for different folders.
Does Flowistry work in the background?
Yes, Flowistry monitors folders in the background even when the app window is closed. The app runs as a background service and uses minimal system resources.
Can I schedule workflows?
Workflows are triggered by file events (new files, modified files) rather than time schedules. However, you can use global conditions like "only run during business hours" or "only when connected to power."
What triggers are available?
Flowistry offers 30+ trigger types including: filename patterns, file size, file type, file age, tags, MIME type, file content (regex), EXIF data, OCR text, and compound triggers with AND/OR/NOT logic.
What actions can I perform?
40+ actions including: move, copy, rename, delete, archive (ZIP/TAR), set tags, convert images, extract PDF text, read QR codes, SFTP/FTP upload, send email, webhooks, notifications, and run Shortcuts.
Privacy & Security
Does Flowistry send data to the cloud?
No. Flowistry is a privacy-first app. All file processing happens locally on your Mac. No files or data are ever sent to external servers (except when you explicitly configure SFTP/FTP upload or email actions).
What permissions does Flowistry need?
Flowistry needs permission to access the folders you want to monitor. It uses macOS security-scoped bookmarks to remember folder access. Network features (SFTP, email) require network access permission.
Is Flowistry sandboxed?
Yes, Flowistry is fully App Sandbox compliant. It only accesses folders you explicitly grant permission to.
Troubleshooting
My workflow isn't triggering. What should I check?
- Make sure the workflow is activated (toggle is on)
- Verify the source folder is configured and accessible
- Check that your trigger conditions match the files
- Look at the execution log for any errors
How do I test a workflow without running it on real files?
Use the Test Mode (dry-run) feature. It simulates the workflow execution and shows you what would happen without making any actual changes to your files.
Can I undo a workflow execution?
Flowistry keeps a history of file operations. For move and rename actions, you can view the original and new paths in the execution log. However, automatic rollback isn't currently available - we recommend testing workflows in dry-run mode first.
Where are my workflows stored?
Workflows are stored in Flowistry's application support folder in your Library. You can export workflows as JSON files for backup or sharing.
